Fire and Safety Engineering–Fire Protection, Online Degree Programs

Safety engineers monitor production processes to make sure that regulations are adhered to and proper procedures are followed. The primary responsibility of most safety engineers is to prevent work place accidents. This can involve a variety of tasks including the designing of safety equipment, training workers, investigating accidents and inspecting work place practices. continued below »

Schools that offer an Online degree or certification:

Eastern Kentucky University offers a Bachelor of Science in Fire and Safety Engineering Technology program and a certificate program online. With a focus on fire protection administration, coursework includes disaster preparedness, fire behavior, emergency scene operations, arson investigation, and more. The certificate program is designed for fire safety professionals who do not wish to take the full degree program.

Like other 21st century fields, safety engineers can be involved in jobs that are quite specialized. For example, some safety engineers study product safety. They might have to test a child’s toy to see if it will hold up under the rough play of the average child. Or they might be responsible for analyzing a cosmetic product to see if it is allergen free and is safe for use on human skin.

Many people who become safety engineers do so after being given safety related responsibilities in their current job. Often they have backgrounds or degrees in other fields, thus needing only a few courses for additional certification or even a degree in safety engineering. Due to the nature of the job, it is easy to utilize the education even while involved in the study process.

Numerous institutions offer certificates or degrees in safety engineering. The outlook for career positions in this field is promising as nearly every major industry wants to make sure both the product and the work place meets safety criteria set by the government. After all, adherence to safety criteria reduces costs related to both accidents and law suits. The average salary for safety engineers is $51,000 per year.

Courses at the Bachelor degree level include Safety and Health for Engineers, Risk and Statistics, Safety Management, and more. In addition to the courses on safety theory and physics, you also need math courses such as algebra, geometry, trigonometry and calculus. You will also take courses in psychology which will help you understand human behavior under certain circumstances such as natural or manmade disasters. Finally, you will learn about safety laws and regulations and will learn how to ensure that workers abide by company safety policies.

The need for safety professionals in numerous fields—including homeland safety—has brought about the Certified Safety Professional (CSP) designation as the recognized mark of the professional in the safety field. The designation is granted by the Board of Safety Professionals but is rapidly gaining acceptance at all levels of workplace safety, from the public and employer level to industry and even the government. Safety programs are administered in such a way that you are trained to sit for the test after which you would receive the CSP certificate.
