Many people who become safety engineers do so after being given safety related responsibilities in their current job. Often they have backgrounds or degrees in other fields, thus needing only a few courses for additional certification or even a degree in safety engineering. Due to the nature of the job, it is easy to utilize the education even while involved in the study process. Numerous institutions offer certificates or degrees in safety engineering. The outlook for career positions in this field is promising as nearly every major industry wants to make sure both the product and the work place meets safety criteria set by the government. After all, adherence to safety criteria reduces costs related to both accidents and law suits. The average salary for safety engineers is $51,000 per year. Courses at the Bachelor degree level include Safety and Health for Engineers, Risk and Statistics, Safety Management, and more. In addition to the courses on safety theory and physics, you also need math courses such as algebra, geometry, trigonometry and calculus. You will also take courses in psychology which will help you understand human behavior under certain circumstances such as natural or manmade disasters. Finally, you will learn about safety laws and regulations and will learn how to ensure that workers abide by company safety policies. The need for safety professionals in numerous fields—including homeland safety—has brought about the Certified Safety Professional (CSP) designation as the recognized mark of the professional in the safety field. The designation is granted by the Board of Safety Professionals but is rapidly gaining acceptance at all levels of workplace safety, from the public and employer level to industry and even the government. Safety programs are administered in such a way that you are trained to sit for the test after which you would receive the CSP certificate.
