College is an opportunity to learn, grow, mature, and find a place in society for all who attend. Knowing what to expect and how to prepare for the experience should begin years ahead of the event, and can help any person adjust to the lifestyle and achieve all they desire.

Choosing a school is the first hurdle to cross, and will determine the starting point of an individual's college career. The school, first and foremost, should offer a program the student is interested in pursuing. For an individual that is uncertain, but has a general idea, the school should have multiple programs to provide the most career paths available to the student. The college of their choosing will more or less determine the college lifestyle they will lead.

What To expect at College

Life is different in college than it was in high school, as the student is in charge of every aspect of their education including attending class, work, scholarship programs, living arrangements, and of course, class work. The student will need to develop a set of time management skills and a system of balancing work, school and socializing. This will allow them to gain the most experiences and best opportunities for future growth and a career. Time management is an integral part of study skills as the time set aside for studying is directly affected by time management skills. In addition, a schedule should be made that will enable all of the work to be accomplished by its due date. This schedule is more of a guideline and will need to be altered as the student progresses in college.

Taking notes in college is one of the key components to surviving, and obtaining a degree. Lectures will be the predominant form of classroom experiences in which the information needs to be recorded. The ability to take proper and well documented notes is quite simple and fairly easy to learn. A student who masters the art of note taking will spend less time cramming before a test and more time learning in the classroom due to their note taking skills.

Listening, although paired with note taking and study skills, does need a little attention. Listening for every detail in a lecture will be close to impossible for almost all students. The idea is to learn how to listen for cues from the instructor or professor for what is pertinent and note worthy. Listening skills will also entail being able to write and listen simultaneously, which, with a little practice and concentration, is an easy skill to gain. Each instructor will have different cues, and the student will need to be aware of these differences to advance and succeed in their college experiences.
