Charles Dickens is a well-known English author who lived a fascinating life. He wrote many popular landmark novels, including Oliver Twist and A Christmas Carol. Dickens was born in 1812 and was the second among eight siblings. Originally, he wrote as a journalist, publishing short excerpts in local periodicals. His first novel, The Pickwick Papers, was published in 1836 and immediately received positive acclaim. Critics believe his novels David Copperfield and Bleak House are both autobiographical in some ways, referencing to his life as a younger man and to his home. Many of the stories Charles Dickens wrote contained moral premises and important social themes, as well as a study in humanity and how people interact within their world and amongst each other.

Today, the novels of Charles Dickens have been interpreted in over 180 different television programs and movies. Of all of his novels, A Christmas Carol is perhaps the most widely known, and has become an integral part of the culture of Christmas around the world. There have been many movies, plays, and cultural references to the character Mr. Scrooge, making it a classic novel for the ages. Dickens’ style of writing has been studied, mimicked, analyzed and praised for many years. His works have certainly made their mark on fans of fiction and authors alike. There is no doubt Charles Dickens is a very important figure in literature, and will continue to be for generations to come.
