Film and Online Digital Photography

Photography is a lot like communication; nearly any career field has a use for it at some point. When considering a career in photography, the first things that come to mind may be photo-journalism where you take pictures for a newspaper or magazine, or a traditional photography business taking high school, college or wedding portraits. Photography, however, is a lot more. Law enforcement uses photographers at crime scenes, science and research needs photography for making permanent records of experiments, insurance companies need photographers for claims adjusting, realtors rely on photography for the best presentation of their properties, and the list goes on. continued below »

Full Sail University Online is regarded as an American, top five film school. The media design program will help you establish a competitive edge with an ability to utilize multiple forms of media in the creation of visual representations designed to communicate company brands or messages to the public.

A few years ago, getting a photography degree online would have been difficult as part of the education involved hours in a lab learning how to develop film with chemicals and complex equipment. Although some modern photographers still work with film, chemicals and manual methods of development, many others have taken advantage of the wide range of possibilities of digital photography.

Digital photography allows you to move pictures directly from a camera to a computer; from there the possibilities of improvement, enhancement, and photo combining are limited only by the photographer’s imagination. Of course, you still have to learn the principles of color, light and shadow, focus, highlighting, density, cropping and all of the other complexities of creating a professional display. But since it can be done with a computer program instead of in a dark room, you can learn your degree and practice all of the techniques from the comfort of your own home.

If still photography isn't your cup of tea, you might consider an online degree in digital film and give yourself opportunities in everything from developing web clips to filming full length movies. In fact, the modern approach to film provides the artistic type with more opportunity than ever as nearly all special effects in today’s flicks are simply a combination of camera and computer. One only has to glance at a couple of sci-fi films to recognize that in today’s film world, there is nothing that can’t be done.

Salaries in photography depend on the geographic area as well on the type of photography. A few highly sought after photo-journalists and film-makers can claim over $100,000 a year, while many entrepreneurial photography shops make only a modest income of about $30,000. Freelance and hobby photographers make even less and usually have another job. The mid-range of photography and film, however, is in the $40,000 to $50,000 range with increases possible as your work becomes known and more in demand. If you are really good, you will eventually be able to name your own price.

The beauty of a photography degree is that you are able to show and sell your work even while you are in the learning process. In fact, many photographers with an eye for the unusual have been able to fund their education with proceeds from their work.
