Medical Billing and Coding actually involves two different processes. Medical coding is the process of applying international codes to any possible treatment, diagnosis, procedure, or condition possible to a human individual. The second is medical billing which is filing properly coded documents with insurance companies or with the government in the case of Medicare and Medicaid. At one time medical billing and coding could be learned at home; the code books could be purchased, and the finished bills could easily be sent to the appropriate place. Today, however, people who have the jobs paying the best salaries have taken the time to earn either a certificate or a diploma in medical billing and coding. The certification is not difficult to obtain and can be earned in as little as 18 months. Due to the complexity of today’s health care, it is probably easier to obtain your certificate through an accredited institution than it is to simply learn the trade through informal study.
Medical coding and billing is one way to work in the health care field without becoming a doctor, nurse, or even having much contact with the public as billing specialists usually work in a secluded office. They receive from 31,000 to $41,000 in annual salary, and are knowledgeable in managing accounts, submitting claims, using financial software, and in electronic record filing and accessing.
