Information Systems Security

Information security is about protecting data from unauthorized seizure, exploitation, destruction, disclosure, or modification. Both state and federal government and the military have long understood the importance of protecting certain information. Today, with the wide use of the Internet, there is even a bigger demand to protect information from prying eyes. State and federal governments, the military, health care facilities, financial institutions, and many private businesses utilize cyberspace in its day-to-day operations. continued below »

Information on customers, employees, research, products, and more are transmitted across networks and even stored on electronic databases. A breach in security that allows such information to be accessed by a wrong party could lead to disaster for business, individuals and our country. Thus, information security specialists are in high demand. This high demand for certified security professionals has created a number of special college courses and degree programs that place an emphasis on information security. Such programs offer instruction on threat recognition, data protection, and how to create and utilize technology advancements to help insure that systems are secure. Because information security specialists are in great demand, their earning potential is above average and, according to the 2006 ComputerWorld salary survey, ranges from around $82,000 per annum to more than $109,000 per annum.
