Arts & Humanities/ Disciplines of Social Sciences

In the early days of college education, nearly all programs of study would have fallen into three categories: Arts & Humanities; Science; and Philosophy. The Arts & Humanities included many courses that students often avoid today, opting instead for programs that limit requirements primarily to major related courses. A comprehensive education once included History courses, psychology, research and debate, art appreciation, studies in literature, foreign languages, music, and much more that many students today are barely exposed to. Nevertheless a solid foundation in Arts and Humanities will improve your ability to achieve in your particular area of interest, regardless of what that might be.

Schools that provide online courses in Humanities:
Kaplan University offers an Associate of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies degree program. The program is designed for students who wish to move their careers ahead, but who have not decided on which specialization best fits their needs. Course emphasis is on critical thinking skills, communication skills, and technical competencies.

For those who already have a Bachelor's Degree in Humanities, Tiffin University offers the Master of Humanities program. This is a liberal arts program for those who want broad, interdisciplinary knowledge and who want to supplement their professional education with intellectual growth and maturity. Students are able to explore themes across a number of disciplines while improving their skills in communication, critical thinking, analytical writing, and effective research.

The name “Humanities” might give you some idea of what to expect. You learn about people, about culture and what causes people to act as they do; you learn interpersonal skills, and you learn to conduct effective research in any topic area. Studies in the arts often does include an art history course, but additionally, you can expect music appreciation, courses in linguistics and foreign language studies, and even courses in law. In fact, nearly all four year degrees that you could earn will be either a Bachelor of Arts in…something, or a Bachelor of Science. The Bachelor of Science degree usually focuses on the more technical or mathematical side of a topic while the Bachelor of Arts will have more of an emphasis on abstract reasoning, creativity, and exploration.

There is almost no end to the possible career choices for a person with a good humanities education. You might work in a museum, or you might become a master of interior design. You could be the writer or photographer for a newspaper, or you might become the anchor person of major TV network. You could direct non-profit agencies, develop a career in advertising, or launch your own writing career. And, if you need to specialize for a career you want, you will already have solid skills that you can build on for nearly any job you can imagine.

The salary a person could expect with a humanities degree is impossible to predict as most people specialize in a particular major within the overall program. The actual career area will determine the salary you can expect.

At one time, the only way to get a Humanities degree was through traditional campus study while those in business degree programs had the flexibility of being able to study online. Today, however, many fine universities offer their humanities programs online as well as on campus. Furthermore, if your university is an accredited institution, you will be able to apply the same loans and grants as any campus student.
