As with many 21st century disciplines, you can earn either a Bachelor degree or a Master's degree in Computer Science without ever leaving the comfort of your home and without quitting your current job. Your degree will give you a knowledge of programming languages, algorithms, and various software along with skills in problem solving and design solutions. If you choose to do so, you can still attend a traditional school, but due to the time and cost saving advantages, many 21st century students earn their degrees online. The discipline and attention to detail required of independent study will only enhance your ability to apply your computer science knowledge to the career situation of your choice.

Beginning salaries for a person with a Computer Science degree range from $50,000 to over $90,000 a year. The difference, when two individuals have the same qualifications, is determined by the amount of experience and by the ability of a particular industry to pay. For example, the "computer guru" of a public school system might have a salary no higher than that of the average teacher, especially in a small, relatively poor county, and might be responsible for the computers and related technology and applications in multiple buildings. On the other hand, the degreed computer scientist in a banking institution, health care industry, or government agency could be paid very handsomely and might have several assistants to help manage simpler tasks.

Another interesting possibility for a person with a Computer Science degree is in the field of "consultation." A private consultant who has established a reputation can name his own price and can pick and choose the jobs he wants to take on. For example, if you become an expert in computer security or in virus detection and clean up, you could ask as much as $150 an hour for your time. Of course, you wouldn't start out at the price, but if you are good at what you do, you will be amazed at how quickly your services will be needed.

Your desired career will determine the precise degree you need as Computer Science degrees are available at the Associate, Bachelor, and Master's degree levels. Some people worry that with all the outsourcing of technology jobs to India, those with technology related degrees are apt to have difficulty finding work. However, according to the University of Colorado, the current and projected outlook for people with Computer Science degrees is good. Furthermore, according Money Magazine, the "software engineer" is number one among the top ten "Best Jobs in American." Also, the US Department of Labor Bureau Statistics projects that from 2002 to 2012, six of the ten occupations with the most new jobs will be computer related. Even with India handling the helpdesk calls, it doesn't look like the person with a degree in Computer Science will have a problem finding work.
