Architectural
drafters need to have special knowledge of traditional drafting techniques
and be able to create and draw technical details and rough sketches. In
addition, they need to be able to specify structural dimensions and recommend
types of materials and procedures to be used.
Some drafters utilize their
knowledge of engineering and manufacturing theory and standards to determine
design elements and they often utilize technical handbooks, tables, and
calculators to complete their work. These individuals must have good mechanical
abilities and visual aptitude and possess knowledge of manufacturing and
construction methods. They need to be able to draw well and provide detail
drawings accurately and neatly. Because of increasingly complex design
problems and manufacturing processes, as well as industrial growth, the
demand for drafters is still strong. Employers prefer individuals who
have completed post-secondary training in drafting and who have well-developed
drafting and mechanical drawing skills, knowledge of drafting standards,
and who understand the various CADD techniques. The earning potential
starts around $40,000 per annum.

can start by earning a degree via the internet. Online courses include
CADD, mechanical drawing, lettering, blue print drawing and various mathematics
courses. A certificate in drafting will often qualify you for an entry
level position with an architectural firm as a beginner draftsman. Programs
